School Garden

St Bernadette’s is committed to school gardening

Children have opportunities to tend the garden, learning how to prepare the soil, sow seeds, tend for the plants and eventually harvest the crop. The garden’s produce can often be found on the school lunch menu. The school is currently working towards Level 3 on the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) benchmark scheme for school gardening. The campaign aims to encourage and support schools to develop and actively use a school garden. As part of the campaign, schools are provided with resources and an extensive programme of professional development.

The garden is also a peaceful place where children can relax and think. The Garden of Remembrance is a place where children come to think about loved ones who have died.

RHS Campaign For School Gardening – Partner School

The school is proud to be one of five schools in the North West selected to become a Royal Horticultural Society Partner School. The school will benefit from professional training to help teachers develop horticultural skills and make best use of the garden to deliver the curriculum. The RHS will also provide resources such as tools and seeds. Part of the school’s role will include hosting training events and helping the RHS to liaise with local schools. Teachers and children will benefit from working outside with an RHS advisor once a term. The school will also provide a commitment to working with the wider community to involve them as much as possible in the school garden.
